The Fall of the Corn

We had a terrific storm during the night Tuesday and this is what greeted us on Wednesday morning when Cohen and I took a stroll around the yard.  I knew we had a lot of rain as it looked as if water had rushed in sheets over different areas of the yard.  Of course, corn doesn't have a very strong root system and our ground was mush because of the rain so it would not have taken much to topple the corn stalks.

Cohen tried to play with the hose reel.  His little smile almost made me say yes.  But, we walked on to the front yard and he found a broom to sweep with and soon forgot the hose.

He swept his way up to the front door and in we went.

Leaf Rain

When Sophia asked to go outside I told her no, it was raining.  She ran to the window and asked, "Couldn't I could put on boots and go out because it's just leaf rain?"  She had seen the leaves falling in profusion from the trees and not being able to see the rain  figured the ground was the only thing wet, therefore, boots would do!
I said she could use my umbrella, and run out for just a minute while I stood on the porch and watched her.  This made her happy.

Sophia again practices her photography skills using Cohen and I as her subjects.  She also took pictures of her pizza, the curtains, and the floor.  I'll leave those to your imagination.

I discovered Sophia asleep with a balloon I had given her this morning floating above her head.  She had wrapped the balloon's ribbon tie around her wrist.  I had to get a picture and discovered something wrong with the camera.  All of the pictures were very blurred.  I couldn't figure it out. After I got home and downloaded the pics it came to me.....it's grease from Sophia's fingers on the camera's lens!  I had to laugh.  I was able to clean it all off.  My shirt tail did the trick....

Sunday News

The Star of Bethlehem had these few blooms hanging on.  This truly is the last of summer's jewels.

Margaret has decided to move the white iris from their bed behind the house to the side front yard.  They have multiplied so much that they are bound and are not doing well.  Margaret says November is the time to pull and separate the bulbs for replanting.  I would love to use the raised area for herbs and zinnias next summer.  I feel I could handle that much.
Margaret doesn't like to work on Sunday, but she has to work when the weather allows.  I helped a bit ( about 45 minutes to her several hours ) this afternoon and we did get a lot of weeds pulled and some nice size piles of the debis stacked for moving to the burn pile.

Margaret wasn't able to work in her herb garden this year because of the heat and her health.  I am amazed at how much junk grew over everything while she was unable to tend it. The little oasis looks simply awful and beyond repair.  I'm sure it will get put right if Margaret can work as she wants to through Autumn and early winter.

The frequent and heavy rains have ruined the leaves.  There is mold or fungus on everything and we've had no cold snap to bring about any color.  The ground is mushy where ever you walk; the moss is showing beautiful green jewel tones though!

Moss grows on the incline of a ditch at the woods edge.

A picture from the back side of the house near our fence line.

The pines are dieing.  I wonder if it is the same fungus that is killing the pines out west.  When I was in Denver, CO, this summer I was told a fungus was killing their pines.
This is not good news as the front property line is edged with 3 rows of large pines.  I don't like pine trees, but sure don't want to see them die!  They do hide the road and muffle a lot of the traffic noise.  This is a dead end road but there is a new housing development below us and it has increased traffic more than a hundred fold.

We had to play indoors today.

We had a hard rain for most of the morning.  The humidity was awful when the rain did stop.
Here I tried to get a picture of the rain hitting the sidewalk.  You really can't see how the drops were bouncing back when they hit, that is what I was trying to catch.
Cohen didn't mind the rain one bit....here he enjoys his lunch.

Both Sophia and Cohen had good naps and woke ready to play.
Sophia rode her tricycle, ran sprints down the hall and danced with Murphy until he just dropped!
Here Murphy sings as he and Sophia turn in circles and dance.
Murph drops, but, Sophia is still going strong!
